BERR releases two tender documents for studies under the Digital switchover action plan

Consumers are faced with a number of choices in equipping themselves for DTV reception in preparation for the switch from analogue terrestrial TV reception. Optimising these choices for each consumer's individual situation is difficult, given the technical complexity involved. Many need help in making the right choices. BERR is leading an Action Plan for switchover that aims to encourage the development and availability in the UK market place of a wide range of digital TV receivers incorporating agreed "best practice" features in preparation for switchover. As part of the Action Plan they are initiating 2 studies that are now up for tender.

One study will look in detail at what may be considered as one of the key user interfaces - the remote control for the Set Top Box (STB).
Using the STB provided for the Digital Switchover Help Scheme in Copeland, the Contractor will undertake a practical assessment of the performance of remote controls currently on the market. This will provide objective performance data to inform the future development of remote controls. An optional package of work, selected if funding permits, is to look at a second STB, with a more limited practical trial.

A second study addresses these needs in two areas of interfacing to a TV and to a Digital Set Top Box (STB). The contractor will look at the remote controls protocols for these devices, and whether a common standard can be found or derived that could be available on most or all of these devices, to enable a particular remote control unit to control any digital TV device. The other part of this study will look at electrical interfaces to TVs and STBs - what interfaces are currently available and how we could best achieve a common standard that will allow accessibility support devices and services to be accessed.
